Lewis: A simple solution for organizing your recipes

After several weeks or, actually, months, of plotting to organize my personal collection of recipes, I finally ended up with a rainy weekend afternoon to tackle it. If you're like me, you know how random recipes can pile up and take over virtually every drawer in the kitchen (and elsewhere).

Years ago, I started a system that involved a three-ring binder with dividers for different types of dishes. I even went to the trouble of pasting envelopes to the backs of the dividers to hold recipes that weren't printed on full-sized sheets of paper.

What I finally realized, was that there was nowhere to put the recipes that were neither on letter paper nor tidy little recipe cards - in other words, the vast majority of my recipes, which were clipped out of magazines or scribbled on scraps of paper. The way I initially dealt with this was by pasting my oddly-shaped recipes onto sheets of notebook paper that were binder-ready, but inevitably, I was left with some recipes with ingredients and instructions printed on opposite sides. I also realized that I no longer used at least a third of the recipes I'd collected roughly 10 years ago, so it was time to do some weeding.

This turned out to be a more enjoyable task than I'd anticipated, because my notebook, as muddled as it might be, tends to take me back through time. Whenever I print anything for myself, it's always on the back of recycled paper, so my recipe collection is full of treasures beyond tasty dishes.
